Blue Whales – Return of the Giants
Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D takes viewers on a journey of a lifetime to explore the world of the magnificent blue whale, a species rebounding from the brink of extinction. Following two scientific expeditions—one to find a missing population of blues off the exotic Seychelles Islands, the other to chronicle whale families in Mexico’s stunning Gulf of California—the film is an inspirational story that transforms our understanding of the largest animal ever to have lived.
This film, narrated by Andy Serkis, gave me an opportunity to re-team with director Hugh Pearson, who I had previously worked with on both The Hunt and Our Planet. The scale of the film offered up the potential to do a very widescreen kind of score… It felt like an opportunity to do something that was very spacious, very compositionally simple, but with a sense of weight and size… something appropriate for the incredible creatures that populate the film. What emerged was something melodic and hopefully very emotional, and it was wonderful to record in London in September 2022. For this score, rather than recording the musicians separately as would often be the case, I recorded the whole band together in Studio 1 at Abbey Road something that I feel added a great deal to the emotion of the soundtrack.
